Pancakes are a beloved breakfast (or any meal if you ask us) treat and if your pup is giving you those irresistible begging eyes while you're flipping them, you might wonder can dogs eat pancakes?
Can Dogs Eat Pancakes?
Many store-bought pancakes are unsuitable for dogs to eat, so we would recommend avoiding these altogether.
This is because they often contain flour, sugar and salt, as well as preservatives. Some varieties may even contain ingredients which are poisonous to dogs, such as chocolate, xylitol or raisins.
That doesn’t mean your dog has to miss out on all of the fun, we’ve got the perfect homemade, dog-friendly pancake recipe that’s safe, simple, and sure to get tails wagging.
3 Ingredient Pancake Recipe for Dogs
It can be tempting to give your dog some of your own pancakes, but as mentioned above, this can come with some risks. Opt for this dog-friendly pancake recipe instead.
Step 1: Gather all of the ingredients
This recipe requires only 3 ingredients:
- 1 ripe banana
- 2 eggs
- Your dog’s favourite treats
- [optional] dog-safe peanut butter
- [optional] plain, unsweetened yoghurt
Step 2: Mash the bananas
In a bowl, mash the banana with a fork until it reaches a smooth, puree-like consistency.
Step 3: Add the eggs
Next, crack both of the eggs into the bowl of mashed banana and whisk together until fully combined.
Step 4: Heat the pan ready for frying
Place your frying pan over a low heat and then add a small amount of unsalted butter, swirling it around the pan until melted.
Step 5: Cook the pancakes
Using a ladle, pour a small amount (roughly the size of a cookie) of the pancake mixture into the heated pan. Don’t be too concerned about it resembling a perfectly-round shape, taste is the main priority here. Heat on one side until golden and then flip to cook the other side.
Step 6: Allow to cool, add topping and serve
Let the pancakes cool for at least 10 minutes to avoid burning your pooch’s mouth. Once cooled, add their favourite treats and serve.
Step 7: Tag us in your creations
If your pup devoured their pancakes in record time, we’d love to see it! Tag us @butternutbox on Instagram and share your dog’s pancake feast. If you were fast enough to capture it, that is…
Things to Consider Before Feeding Your Dog Pancakes
Practice portion control
Whilst us humans are often guilty of over-indulging when it comes to pancakes, it’s important to ensure that you keep the portion size sensible for your pup.
Keep pancakes as an occasional treat
Whilst our dog-friendly recipe is full of goodness, pancakes should be fed infrequently as a treat.
Make sure the pancakes are cooked thoroughly
Ensure that the pancakes are thoroughly cooked on both sides, under-cooked eggs could wreak havoc on your dog’s tummy. No sloppy poops on our watch.
